Heh heh, some dudes in other posts called Scott Layden "Bin Layden" and Dan Majerle "Drizzle Dan" (parodying Thunder Dan). I suddenly rememebred a comment by a friend saying that NBA Nicknames are on the wane with uninspired ones like J-Rich, T-Mac and C-Webb.

Here are some NBA Player nicknames I liked and will never forget
Leonard Robinson - "Truck"
Pete Maravich - "Pistol Pete"
George Gervin - "Iceman"
Maurice Lucas - "The King of Pain"
Robert Parish - "The Chief"
Kenny "Sky" Walker
Dominique Wilkins - "The Human Highlight Film"

And I remember a comment on Joe Barry Carroll during the 1990 season with the Golden State Warriors, "He's the real Mailman. He's slow, he doesn't deliver, and he's surrounded by dogs."

lol.....there arent many current ones I like. Most players just have initial nicknames now. My personal fav:

Shaq-the big aristotle

There's too many big nicknames though

KG- The Big TIcket
Bryant Reeves-Big Country
Tim DUncan-The Bug Fundamental

etc etc

Other favs would have to be AI-The Answer, Vince Carter-Vinsanity, Paul Pierce-The Truth

To me the leter nicknames are gettin' old

KG
AI
GP
TD
T-Mac

blah blah blah

what's shocking is Kobe a T-Mac, two of the top 4 players today, and the two most exciting probably....dont have nicks!!!!!

Tha Answer, Vinsanity and the Truth - I'd forgotten about those! Silly me... I loved those too.

I also suddenly remember Johnny Most (late Celtic announcer who died 10 years ago)'s nickname for Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn of the Pistons
"McFilthy and McNasty"

And who could forget Anthony "Spud" Webb and Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues?

Other nicknames I just remembered:

Charles Connors "Chuck" Person - The Rifleman
Jamaal Wilkes - "Silk" - coz his jumper was as smooth as silk
Dennis Rodman - "Worm"
Ken Norman - "Snake"
Eric Floyd - "Sleepy"
Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon
and I can't believe I forgot David Robinson - The Admiral.

Hmmm, possible nicknames for Kobe - "Jailbird Bryant" "Ball Hog Bryant" just kidding... seriously, we should call him the Sizzler.. he IS named after a steak after all... and when he's hot, he's hot!

For McGrady, hmmm - The Big Mac? naah.Power Mac? Apple would get free advertising...

How about Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell....

Lloyd "World" B. Free
"Chocolate Thunder" (Darryl Dawkins)
"Big Dog" (original: Antoine Carr, current: Glen Robinson)
Nate "Tiny" Archibald
The Round Mound of Rebound (Charles Barkley)
The Microwave (Vinny Johnson)
The Whopper (Billy Paultz -- that's reaching pretty deep into the bag)
Clyde "The Glide" Drexler

And you take it for granted because you've known him by this for so long: Earvin "Magic" Johnson. A really great nickname.

Much like the league/game itself, the old ones seem better to me.

Robert "Tractor" Traylor is one of the few modern nicknames with a creative old-school flavor.

Nice ones! Does "World" still count as a nickname? I thought he legally changed his name to World...

Also the original "Big" nickname - Wilt Chamberlain "The big dipper" (this was the nickname he preferred over wilt the stilt - he was called the dipper coz he had to dip his head to go through doors...)

Lester "The Molester" Conner.

I'm sure that nickname got him many speaking gigs at elementary schools.

"And now boys and girls, Lester, "The Molester" Conner!!!!!!"

God I miss those old nicknames.

I also once read this line in a magazine, and wish the nickname caught on
" Mini Vinnie...Vinnie Johnson's the Microwave, (John Battle)'s the Toaster Oven."

a couple more:

"Tree" Rollins (that was a nickname, right?)

"Mad Max" Vernon Maxwell

Glenn "Doc" Rivers-- reportly the nickname was given to him by Rick Majerus at a summer basketball camp when Rivers was a kid. Guess he told Majerus his fav player was Dr. J (there's another one) so Majerus (who could use a nickname himself: how about The Round Mound of Round Mound) started calling him 'Doc' and it stuck.

I'm sure we're still missing some: oh yeah:

"Plastic Man" -- Stacy Augmon.
"The Big Nasty" -- Corliss Williamson

One of my all time favorites has to be Anthony "Pig" Miller.

Also Earl "the Pearl" just always sounded so cool to me. Very few current NBA nicknames sound that smooth.
